An Introduction to the Local Pubs I frequent.

            The Pagewood Rex.
Part of a string of pubs open by the Rex Group in the 50’s and 60’s and it’s not received an upgrade since. I like this place for its shady localism, cheap beer and good old fashioned service. Free platters of cabanossi and cheese are a regular occurrence. I am under the impression that this watering hole fully supports and fosters gambling. Probably one of the only places in Sydney where you could try and hustle a bottle of liquor after 10.30.

      The Regent.
The Regent is one of the only pubs that serve Bundy and Coke on tap in a schooner. If you hit this place when it’s not uni night you’ve scored. Pool tables, good feeds and plenty of great memories have been made in the smoking area of this pub. If you’re there during the day on weekday beware.. plenty of glut from Churchills and Souths Juniors further south on Anzac Pde. My advice is to ask for a bundy, park yourself on a bench looking out to Anzac Parade and enjoy the sights of Kingsford.

Churchills.
This pub has lost a the stature it had in the early 2000s but is still a great place to go to watch a sports match. Honestly, this isn’t my favourite place on the list but I know of a small underground circle of people who hold the venue in high esteem. Great for a dodgy, sports bar hair of the dog. Not the number one place on the list but I respect the people who rate it. If anyone asks me to go for a drink here I’ll say yes to coming.

 The Sands
This quintessential establishment is nestled away in the South Maroubra car park and overlooks the pristine buildings of Lexington. You might catch a local band or topless waitresses there on a school night. My advice is to probably not go here.

       Matraville Hotel
Known colloquially as ‘Matto Pub’.. only the finest from the very southern end of Bunnerong Road will be seen in the Oasis Lounge here. This is the last pub on the eastern headland of Sydney and is a reflection of its socio-geographic positioning. Conveniently located next door to a 24 hour pie shop called House of Pie. The ABC crime series ‘Old School’ was filmed here. The show stars Bryan Brown as a retired crim and Sam Neil as a retired cop. If you watch the show, you’ll pretty much be dealing with the same folk. Currently rated 3.1 on UrbanSpoon but that’s why we love it!

That’s all for now. Please let me know if you’d like to hear more about my bs in the lower east side.
